Remembrance, Indifference
Judges 2:10
"After that whole generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation grew up, who knew neither the LORD nor what He had done for Israel."
We are living in an age where there is a continuous attack against biblical principles and values. Our institutions are in flux about its foundations. The onslaught of secularism & pluralism masquerading as tolerance will leave no stone unturned.
Joshua 4:4-7
"So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, and said to them, "Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, 'What do these stones mean?' tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel for ever."
There is a strident removal of these stones upon which we remember what foundational principles our institutions (ethics, human rights, the family, community etc.) are built upon. Postmodern society seems to strive to have our feet firmly planted in midair.
And yet beyond our parents and elders passing down of wisdom, (and we choose the people/institutions that influence us to a certain extent also we influence its shaping), accepting it, and upholding it for the generation to come, continues to be a choice we, have to make — the responsibility of remembrance ultimately rests upon us in adulthood and maturity, lest we sink into indifference.
Ecclesiastes 12:1
"Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, "I find no pleasure in them".
