"It is a Thing of Brass!"
Judges 8:26-27
"The weight of the gold rings he asked for came to seventeen hundred shekels, not counting the ornaments, the pendants and the purple garments worn by the kings of Midian or the chains that were on their camels' necks. Gideon made the gold into an ephod, which he placed in Ophrah, his town. All Israel prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and his family."
Lord let me call my idols for what they are. "It is a thing of brass!" as Hezekiah said "Nehushtan!". Father, help me understand that 'anything you try to build your identity on, other than God — whether that be family, work, success etc — will ultimately disappoint you.' Indeed the world is an idol-builder, 'but the Lord is in His holy temple. Let all the earth keep silence before Him.' (Habakkuk 2:20). Holy Spirit, my deceitful heart is covetous, but only You can deliver real satisfaction to my deepest desires. Help me see, and live, life in proper perspective.
2 Kings 18:1-4
"In the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Hezekiah son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign. He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Abijah, daughter of Zechariah. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father David had done. He removed the high places, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles. He broke into pieces the bronze snake Moses had made, for up to that time the Israelites had been burning incense to it. It was called Nehushtan."
"There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of every man which cannot be filled by any created thing, but only by God, the Creator, made known through Jesus." ― Blaise Pascal, Pensées
