Choose for Yourselves This Day

Joshua 24:14–15
"Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."

"Decision" has its etymology with the Latin verb "cis" meaning to cut/chop (scissors, incisions). The directive to Israel "choose for yourselves now" (v. 15) asks them for a decision which to cut off in their lives? The idols or serving the One True God? The Lord has said we can't serve two masters at a time, either we will love one and hate the other (Matt 6:24). Truth is are hearts are often confused, fickle, and needy; and at certain times depending on each person faith in God becomes tough. Catholic philosopher GK Chesterton surmised that when belief in God becomes difficult, the tendency is to turn away from Him—but, "in heaven’s name, to what?" When the Word of God became offensive, His own disciples started to desert Him. He asked His Twelve, "You do not want to leave too, do you?". He also asked for a decision to which St. Peter responded, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God" (John 6:68). "But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."
