Thirst and Living Water

Judges 15:17-20
"And so it was, when he had finished speaking, that he threw the jawbone from his hand, and called that place Ramath Lehi. Then he became very thirsty; so he cried out to the LORD and said, “You have given this great deliverance by the hand of Your servant; and now shall I die of thirst and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?” So God split the hollow place that is in Lehi, and water came out, and he drank; and his spirit returned, and he revived. Therefore he called its name En Hakkore, which is in Lehi to this day. And he judged Israel twenty years in the days of the Philistines."

Jesus gives us Living Water that "we may never thirst again." Water is such a potent symbol for the needs (thirsts and hunger) of humanity — Physical, emotional, intellectual, psychological, social, relationships, self-actualization, and onto our deepest and innermost longings. We have varying levels of need and more often than not, we are at best confused and at worst, deceived about our needs. God knows what we need, the Holy Spirit dwells in us and petitions for us and our Lord intercedes for us. We may not even know what we really need or want, but the awesome Creator of this majestic universe who "made the stars, also", hears, knows and understands the cries of our hearts — our deepest hungers and thirst.

Genesis 21:14-21
"Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba. When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes. Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, “I cannot watch the boy die.” And as she sat there, she began to sob. God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.” Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink. God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer. While he was living in the Desert of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from Egypt."
