The Odds of Disappointment
Psalms 81:10–16
“I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth and I will fill it. “But My people would not listen to Me; Israel would not submit to Me. So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices. “If My people would only listen to Me, if Israel would only follow My ways, how quickly I would subdue their enemies and turn My hand against their foes! Those who hate the LORD would shudder before Him, and their punishment would last forever. But you would be fed with the finest of wheat; with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”
God is trustworthy in all things, He is faithful even when we are faithless. The Apostle Paul wrote to St. Timothy of “a trustworthy saying”, that “if we died with Him, we will also live with Him; if we endure, we will also reign with Him; if we deny Him, He will also deny us; if we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself (II Tim 2:11–13). This is interesting because God is ever faithful because it is rooted in His character, He can let go if some of us wish to deny or reject Him but He can’t help but love, remain, provide and sustain and so we can depend on Him. South African author Gift Gugu Mona said, “when you eagerly depend upon the LORD for any provision, you eliminate all odds of disappointment.” Our disappointments perhaps are more of the nature of our expectations, and that can be varied. We can, however, put our trust completely in Him, and even when it appears hopes are dashed, and things do not completely go our way, we can go God’s way, remain and wait on Him to fulfil His purpose and promises. LORD give us that posture of trust in You alone for all we need and desire. You are faithful and so are worthy to receive the utmost praise and worship from us Your children. How readily, indeed we trust as we listen to You and follow Your ways (v. 13), you would rescue, deliver, and bless in times of need and even from our own stubbornness (v. 12), and satisfy us (v. 16). We honour You today, this week, and all the days of our lives. Amen.
