Streams Through the Desert
Isaiah 43:14–21
“This is what the LORD says— your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “For your sake I will send to Babylon and bring down as fugitives all the Babylonians, in the ships in which they took pride. I am the LORD, your Holy One, Israel’s Creator, your King.” This is what the LORD says— He who made a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters, who drew out the chariots and horses, the army and reinforcements together, and they lay there, never to rise again, extinguished, snuffed out like a wick: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. The wild animals honor Me, the jackals and the owls, because I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to My people, My chosen, the people I formed for Myself that they may proclaim My praise.
God will always make a way. Our Holy Father created time as we know it and the universe itself ex nihilo, out of nothing! He breathes out galaxies and nebulae birthplace of stars are but smoke from His nostrils, He exhales stardust. This is how huge and awesome our God is and He cares for us just as He cares for His creation from the least to the greatest that they honour Him, and for Israel (v. 20). The Living Life writer notes, “knowing that His people may feel hopeless in exile, the LORD reminds them of the Exodus and how He parted the Red Sea, making it clear that He is able to lead them out of trouble, even when it seems like there is no way to escape. In fact, the future redemption that the LORD promises Israel will be even greater than what He did for them in the past. He will restore them and provide for them by making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. God will make a way.” Through the deadness of outer space He brings forth planets in star systems that support life, a very delicate thing when we consider it, how He has finely tuned the universe with the constants of the forces of nature and its initial conditions, such as low entropy; He set this all up for life, sentient life, and I daresay, for human life, for us, created in His image (Gen 1:26). How much more through deserts that He runs rivers of life, through the wildernesses of our experience, our troubles, frustrations, and heartaches, the streams of refreshment in His presence flow through because He loves us, His creation. He loves us so much so that He gave His only Son (John 3:16). And He has made a way indeed for us through Jesus Christ, the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). Consider that He has already made a new thing (v. 19) with us, the Bible tells us, “if anyone is in Christ, she is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come (II Cor 5:17),” and I believe that is the beginning of the new thing He is doing in this broken world we live in, it starts with me, with us, His children, “the people I formed for Myself that they may proclaim My praise (v. 21)”, by His grace. Today, I pray with Living Life: “Father God, thank You so much for Your Son, Jesus Christ, who redeemed me not because of what I have done but solely because of Your mercy and grace. I cling to Your grace today and commit myself to You once again. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
