The Distance of Infinity

Psalms 74:12–17
“But God is my King from long ago; He brings salvation on the earth. It was You who split open the sea by Your power; you broke the heads of the monster in the waters. It was You who crushed the heads of Leviathan and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert. It was You who opened up springs and streams; You dried up the ever-flowing rivers. The day is Yours, and Yours also the night; you established the sun and moon. It was You who set all the boundaries of the earth; You made both summer and winter.”

We wonder at God’s power, and we may tremble in fear of Him, however, we praise Him for He is good and we can rest safe in His mighty and loving arms. He is our Father, the King from the start. Asaph’s songs are structured in a simple way that the first half presents his predicament and in the second half, the psalmist looks to God in praise and trust, that is faith. Asaph reminds us of God’s power back in the Exodus when “Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD swept the sea back by a strong east wind all night and turned the sea into dry land, so the waters were divided (Exod 14:21).” Salvation in miraculous (v. 12) and Christ is mighty to save, Immanuel, the LORD your God is with us, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in us; in His love He will no longer rebuke, but will rejoice over us with singing (Zeph 3:17). God is the sovereign King of kings, unlike human emperors He reigns forever. In his exile and final days, former emperor Napoleon Bonaparte wrote of his thoughts on Jesus, “I know men, and I tell you that Jesus is not a mere man. Superficial minds see a resemblance between Christ and the founders of empires, and the gods of other religions, that resemblance does not exist. There is between Christianity and other religions, the distance of infinity. I know men; and I tell you that Jesus Christ is no mere man. Between Him and every person in the world there is no possible term of comparison. Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and I have founded empires. But on what did we rest the creations of our genius? Upon force. Jesus Christ founded His empire upon love; and at this hour millions of men would die for Him.” King Jesus stands alone in power and love! He will overcome evil, the evil we hear and learn of unfolding daily in our news, Jesus will make this all right, two millenia ago, He began His work, because He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those who are with Him are the called and chosen and faithful (Rev 17:14). He will return to finally fulfill His promises which God will bring about in His own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no-one has seen or can see. To him be honour and might for ever. Amen (I Tim 6:14–16).” And so, whilst we travail and express our agony to Him at the feet of His cross, let us have faith, live well and rest assured of His power at work and His sovereignty over all! Praise Him!
